Mini Symposion „When is Art, Art?“

01.07.2016 19:00 – 21:00

“When is art, art?” – A mini symposion in Ingrid Roscheck’s and Rainer Barzen’s art depot in Cologne, in conclusion of the exhibition project “Wechselschicht_Weltdepot”.

For the first time Sibylle Feucht, founder and artist-curator of DAS ESSZIMMER – space for art+ – since the start in 2011 – shows two interlaced solo exhibitions.
In curatorial collaboration with Silke Dombrowsky, culture historian, M.A. from Bonn, an experimental exhibition concept was created that involves beside the exhibition space in Bonn also the art-depot of Barzen and Roscheck.

In this way a space is opened up that usually remains closed to the public and that refuses to become a stage for art. As archive the depot gives the works space more towards being an object rather then being art.

The place for the conversation – visible via webcam at DAS ESSZIMMER and on its website since the start of the exhibition project – sheds light on the banal aspects of artistic objectivity and the necessity of their storage and conservation. The everyday aspects of art and the artistic working reality become public. At the same time the question is raised: When is being art joining the being an object state?

Based on this interest art professionals from Germany and Switzerland have been invited for an exchange on this topic. The simultaneity of the trivial and staged reality of art, art production and their functioning as an object for perception is questioned: When is Art, Art?
– Only when we perceive it in this manner? Or also when it is de facto invisible, packaged and stored away in a depot? What is the value of stored art? What effort has to be taken for its storage?

It is this simultaneity of individual reality and collective truth that become visible as elementary aspects in contemporary art and in the oeuvre of Barzen and Roscheck as demonstrated in the current exhibition project Wechselschicht_ Weltdepot. As Artists in the World they position themselves towards the objects, fragments and found pieces they are surrounded by, in order to make them visible and to fold them up into many layers of meaning. The created Art-Things spread their resonance equally into the collective and
individual space. By that means the artists open a dialog – among each other and their audience.
