Biography

The visual- and sound artist Michae Graeve lives and works in melbourne, Australia. He performs, exhibits internationally and teaches sound, sculpture practice at RMIT Melbourne. His artistic activities include above all painting and sound art – in installations and performances. His compositions and muscial performances enter into a dialogue with his painting, both explicity and implicitly. In doing so, he tries to continously expand the scope of his work and its vibrations to trangress boundaries. The visual aspects of his work are based on non-reprentational and abstract traditions applied to canvas and walls, while the sound is based on turntables, loudspeaker installations and improvisations. The installation room offers a playground for overlapping and juxtaposing, which leads to a tension-laden dialectics between causal and clumsy interrelationships. Since 2007 Michael has been a ember of the Executive Board of Liquid Architecture Sound Inc. and has been President and Chairman since 2011. He was a member of the Executive Board and Program Manager at West Space Inc. (2000-2004) and a founding member of Grey Area Art Space Inc (1996-1999).

His awards and residencies include: Tonspur 19 in Wien 2007, Australia Council Residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) New York 2005, Samstag International Travelling Scholarship 2004 and Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence 2003. He has participated in over 20 solo exhibitions and his work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including in Dunedin, Wellington, Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, Bonn, Osnabrück, München, Berlin, Würzburg, Vienna, Kortrijk, Turin, Seoul, Sydney und Melbourne.

He is represented by e/static in Turin, Italy and his works are in public and private collection in Australia, Europe and the USA.
