Petra Egg (Vienna/AT) und Doris Schmid (Berlin/GER) take the surreal ”animal stories” by Julio Cortázar (AR) as a starting point for their own medial explorations.
The joint exhibition BLINK by Doris Schmid (Berlin/GER) and Petra Egg (Vienna/AT) is a part of the video parcours of VIDEONALE.14 at Kunstmuseum Bonn.
In their video installations both artists refer to the texts of the Argentine author Julio Cortázar (1914 – 1984) who explored and blurred the lines between reality and fiction.
The two channel video installation BLINK by Doris Schmid has its base in the text Axolotl by Cortázar as an impulse for cinematic reflections on views. BLINK does not follow the surreal and mysterious process of the report about the salamander kind of creature which turns from an object of observation to the observer itself. Doris Schmid disposes selected motives, expands them and finds new references.
In her volumetric video installation Double, Petra Egg concerns herself with the short story Los Testigos (The witnesses) by Cortázar, which is about an unusual fly. The video installation takes up the motive of the fly, a photo series with corresponding passages from the story completes the installation.
The third, accessible installation reflex – which is the joint work of the artists – creates the spatial and content regarding connection between the two solo series.
