Human Conditions

23.08.2012 – 27.09.2012

Copa & Sordes (Basel/CH) want to permeate art and everyday life in such a way that they point beyond their pure functionality of human existence.

Copa & Sordes’s main interest concentrates on human conditions and on everyday life. With their exhibition they want to interfuse art and daily life, to explore human existence beyond its pure functionality.

Their installation Wartezimmer (panel, ink-jet on african damast, flatscreen, HDV/video, 4 chairs, 2012) was realised for Bern University Hospital (CH), as part of a research project of the Bern University of the Arts and the Swiss National Science Foundation: A seemingly enraptured baroque orgy of colour and form covers the walls and shows unexpectedly ordinary and contemporary motives on a closer inspection.

Die kleine Wolke (acrylic on canvas, video projection, 2007) abolishs the border between video and painting: two little children playing and melting with the cloudy background.

Alles über uns (2-channel video projection, 2011) leads into a narrow old people’s home room und shows a morning routine: An old man is helped out of bed, gets washed and prepared for the day. This series was produced as a part of the series Helping Points. The unusual external perspective of the „video distance“ enables the viewer to pay attention to a situation one often looks away – even for the portrayed themselves.
