Her show Mauer (wall) at ESSZIMMER enables complex and versatile references to physical as well as mental walls in the present and the past. The exhibition focuses on the Berlin Wall and on the history of Berlin´s separation. Especially the fate of Winfried Freudenberg in 1989 moved the artist. As one of the last wall´s victims Freudenberg died at his tragic attempt to escape from East to West Germany by riding in a gas balloon, shortly before the Berlin Wall fell. Perrine Lacroix is following the trail of this frontier breakthrough as well as the shadow the Berlin Wall still casts on history.
