Erftstadt/GER | Website

Joachim Zoepf, lives and works in Erftstadt/GER, as a musician and composer. He came to free improvised music via free jazz. Since 2018, he has also been working with artistic videos.

Joachim Zoepf studied saxophone from 1979, first in Vienna, then in Cologne. Since 1983 he has been working as a freelance musician and music teacher. In 1988 he came to free improvised music, starting from mainstream jazz and via free jazz, he developed his own playground. He gained experience in new music, new music theatre and entered into collaborations with dancers, actors, sound artists and visual artists. For some years now, he has also been developing artistic videos.

s an organiser, he was involved in cultural politics in the Cologne Jazzhaus initiative and the Initavtivkreis Freie Musik, among others.

In his field he belongs to the top class of bass clarinettists and his soprano playing only confirms this. Fascinating. An excellent album by a great improviser in the tradition of Wolfgang Fuchs, Urs Leimgruber and John Butcher.

Jean Michel van Schouwburg about the solo album Bagatelles

(…) that Zoepf does not present himself to us as a soloist reflected in the splendour of his virtuosity, but that his solo excursions are also social practice. They are a permanent questioning of musical reality for its possibilities to learn to listen differently. They do not accept a popanza. One can learn a lot from them for one’s own approach to the world. The fact that he works electronically (again) on “Geschmacksarbeit”, digitally mirroring, distorting, overlaying, distracting his saxophone and bass clarinet sounds, is to be understood in this consequence. He understands the computer programme neither as an effects device nor as a break with his previous playing practice. It is an extension whose results have an effect on the original playing process, revising it by enriching it.
