Grey Passion

07.05.2015 – 25.06.2015

Michael Volkmer’s space-specific work “Grey Passion” takes Holbein’s cycle “The grey Passion” (1494 – 1500) and its conscious renunciation of color as the starting point of his solo show.

Michael Volkmer’s objects and installations often have their origin in everyday, banal or even discarded material, such as found hubcaps, glass bottles, lamp stands or selected souvenirs that have gone out of fashion. These experience a brilliant transformation when Michael Volkmer covers them with the (non-)color RAL 1015. By means of color matching, ensembles that belong together are the same and yet slightly different. Hubcaps become objects similar to church feasts, and the glass bottles saved from recycling become steles. The resulting space between banality and stylization opens the space for interpretations and insights.

The starting point for the site-specific work Grey Passion at DAS ESSZIMMER is Holbein’s cycle The grey Passion (1494 – 1500), which, by deliberately renouncing colors, sought to alienate the multicolor of the world of appearance, which from today’s perspective is a familiar concept in contemporary art.
